Another hurdle for those who wish to change society.
“Social scientists spend a lot of time and effort criticizing, deconstructing and otherwise problematizing various systems, institutions, ideologies and policies. However, it is much less common for researchers to develop alternative social arrangements that could be plausibly implemented in the “real world.” And it is exceedingly rare for social scientists to meaningfully engage with the public and policymakers in order to help translate those possibilities into realities. However, these latter steps are arguably the most important for actually mitigating the social problems researchers identify and analyze.
Again, people tend to stand behind established orders, even ones that are highly dysfunctional, even ones they don’t particularly like or believe in, unless and until there is a viable and attractive alternative they can rally behind instead. Absent options, critique approaches futility.
Social science could be much more impactful, therefore, if researchers utilized their expertise to not merely articulate what doesn’t work (and why)—but to really push themselves to think through what could work better. And not, could work in an ideal world, or what would’ve worked in a counterfactual past, or what will work in an envisioned future (assuming x, y and z). The focus should be on what practical steps can be plausibly taken, by actual agents, here and now, to make headway on social problems.”

Translation? Sheep sleep, and are too wimpy to go out on their own and change anything for the better. Instead, they pick some “campaign” they can waste their lives on, keeping them overly preoccupied and therefore useless to invent or implement anything – ever.
None of the passage quoted applies to true leaders, which makes me wonder why you’d even post something like that here. It’s useless to do so.

‘Translation’ does not mean ‘how I’m going to frame and spin this so I can easily discard it’.
“None of the passage quoted applies to true leaders”
This suggests your definition of ‘true leader’ does not involve said leader being well informed.
The point is that for leaders to lead well, they need to be pointed towards a proper goal to lead towards, not just problem to lead away from. Otherwise you end up with a bunch of ‘true leaders’ randomly going off in different directions, resulting in nobody really going anywhere.
I could leave it there, but the article says critique without solutions is futile. So I suggest, when reading something, try to access the aims of the author. You will be much less likely to overlook the main point.
Such a useful post. Thanks, Arb!

Useful? Tell me how you’re actually using this post to do something different for any of your causes then, Hero. My guess is you are confusing “useful” with the word “interesting”, since based on the continuing dialogue and posts here you’ve all continued to talk a lot and yet nothing in your lives, or other peoples’ lives, has truly changed, or will change.
Y’all be waiting for a government to do it, or some policy maker, or some author, while you continue to complain and blame other people and the rest of the world for all your problems in the meantime.
How has it been used in my circles, and others where there are actual leaders present? New business ventures, new thought ventures outside of perpetual victimhood combined with some sort of action (besides hitting an [ENTER] key, new inventions, new risk-taking, new alliances.
That’s what people who truly (want to) change society do. How about you? Have you taken on anything in that list lately, Mystro? The rest of us don’t need a blog post (or kissing Arb’s ass over it) to get inspired or gain some insight, which is why we’re all out here eating your lunch, so perhaps I should just say thank you.
You can translate all you want from your dictionary, Mystro, but fact is people like you are going to read the above and do NOTHING OF VALUE to change society after reading it, so good luck with all your typing in the meantime. Enjoy your little box, big guy.

“…and yet nothing in your lives…has truly changed, or will change…Y’all be waiting for a government to do it…”
On what do you base this? Are you stalking someone and spying on them, thinking it is me, and deciding that they don’t contribute to society? If so, I think you’re following the wrong person.
The only other explanation I can think of is that you’ve pulled a narrative out of your arse and tried to cram me into it.
“people like
youme are going to read the above and do NOTHING OF VALUE to change society after reading it”There, fixed it for you.
