“Clear language – lucid, rational language – to a man at war with both truth and reason, is an existential threat. Clear language to such a man is a direct assault on his obfuscations, contradictions and lies. To him, it is the voice of the enemy. To him, it is fake news. Because he knows, if only intuitively, what we know to our cost: that without clear language, there is no standard of truth.”

Timely. And so odd that the people today (evangelical Americans) think thesmelves in existential threat. Fear sells, I guess.

So much of the current american political zeitgeist is centred around fear of one issue, segment of people, or another.
Essentially, there is no vision for the future only reactionary waves of fear meant to mobilize the populace into supporting policies that further enhance the oligarchic interests in the US.

Americans are smarter than this, most of them anyway. The quote reminded me of trans supporters, not evangelicals. Don’t know any evangelicals irl. Not sure why foreigners assume they are so prevalent in the USA. They mostly occupy specific areas, like the Bible Belt. Big Northern cities? Not so much. Here in Chicago, descendants of Catholic immigrants are much more common, but most are not very religious (if at all) in this day and age.
