But unfortunately, back here on earth the most oppressed class in Western society – white males – is trumpeting their dismay… nay! anguish! over the lack of white dudery on the upcoming CBS Star Trek Discovery series.
Looks star trekkie enough for me. But of for others…
One opines that, for fans of a relentlessly optimistic and progressive sci-fi show, there seems to be a bit of a disconnect between what Trek is about, and the attitudes of people who watch and inhabit the Trek fandom believe.
I actually kind of relish the amount of whinging going on here, as these oppressed men bloviate on (usually dipping into sexism and racism) about how they cannot relate to the cast because they don’t see themselves portrayed.
Welcome to the default setting of what one half of the world’s population experiences almost every day of their lives.

Life is difficult at the top of the social hierarchy, why can’t you show a little compassion!

It’s such a shame that all these regressive assholes didn’t pick up on the central theme of what Star Trek is all about. That or they’ve only come in during the new movies which have none of Roddenberry in them at all.

Personally I care more about how aweful the Klingons look, like they melted or something.
But I will say these was an inevitable consequence of pushing white people into increasingly seeing them as a tribe of their own with all the white privledge talk, so now they too see themselves as victims and are demanding qoutas, like every other group.
This was bound to happen and the left set the ground work for it.
Personally I’m fine with the casting and the Chinese accent is not so thick I can’t understand it, so that is fine too.
But diversity is no replacement for a good plot and I see nothing to get excited over yet, but of course it’s just a trailer, so we will see.

I think the people who ranted and moaned so much in those screenshots don’t deserve to identify as Trekkies. Star Trek has always been about inclusion and diversity. It’s plain-horrifying to see people try to hijack one of my biggest influences into something obscene.

It’s almost like the diversity demonstrated on Star Trek was okay only if the ‘right’ people were in charge. Seeing a different model and expectations of how society is runs makes those at the top of the hierarchy distinctly uncomfortable.
