I had often wondered about that, but of course when you’re dealing with truly sick f**k’s drunk on personal power, take Hitler for example, you can declare war on Russia, even if you’re already in a losing position along all your warring borders, and you can believe without a doubt that you will win, for it is “God’s will” and you are God. So it is with the ponerologists who rule War Street, Monsatan, the Pentagon, the Whore House, NATO, Zionist Israel, and the rising Nazi wannabe’s throughout the demoralised, de-democratised militarised world. Only one thing driving the ponerologists: their unquenchable greed and need for more power over people; the need to experience that power in dealing death throughout the world. They are DRIVEN and that drive is self-destructive. It is the out-of-control spin of religious/political/financial entropy that is eating up this planet. Do not look for any kind of humane humanity, or even less, common sense in these days among any leadership (exception always proving the rule), that would be a grave mistake. No one can now escape the ponerologist madness unscathed. We may still see, and cling to, a veil of “normalcy” which we generalise by lowering our own standards day by day, but in essence, we are living the “end times” of apocalypse. “Après moi, le déluge!” is the claim and cry of every religiously, politically, financially endowed power head. Sorry folks, but the social bus has gone over the cliff and we’re in free-fall. Pray, scream, blame, protest, take polls, look for a genius among the passengers to stop the bus’s plummeting fall among the passengers: all to no avail. The time to act as an intelligent, sentient and self-aware species was before World War I, probably long before that.

“Do rich and power people ignore the soon-to-be-upon-us and very-immanent Apocalypse?”
Actually the answer to this is ‘yes.’ People don’t seem to realize the grave circumstances we are in. We are facing a deteriorating global economic crisis caused by establishment looting and fraud that — if history is any indication of the future — will collapse into fascist revolutions and world war. Except this time around, world war will literally be an Apocalypse that concludes in the collapse of civilization and the Anthropocene.
When the pump-and-dump stock-market bubble burst in 1929, no one would’ve imagined that the world would be plunged into war within a decade. The very-avoidable truth is that the Earth could very well be a smoldering radioactive wasteland a decade from now.
Despite the scientific method and ‘critical thinking’ there are biases in human thinking that are common among scientists and intellectuals.
First, the human mind was designed to recognize commonly-reoccurring patterns associated with things people desire or fear. It’s inefficient to focus energy on rare occurrences like disasters so people are wired to ignore them. A related instinct is to mock a Cassandra as a Chicken Little.
(Just think of climate scientists who have the anti-catastrophe bias writing papers on global warming. They will tend to be conservative in their estimates to avoid looking extreme. That makes people conservative in their will to take action. That means global warming will be inevitably worse than what scientists and people imagined.)
Second there’s the human’s infinite capacity for rationalization. “Fascist revolutions and world war breaking out? Could never happen!”
So when a frog is in a pot of water gradually boiling — or not — there will be Chicken Littles telling it to jump out and smug browbeaters telling it to stay in. All we have to go on is what evidence and reason tell us and the knowledge our feelings/instincts may want to suppress this kind of knowledge.
As for the rich and powerful, the frog and scorpion tale explains them. The scorpion stings the frog carrying it across the river because it can’t think two steps ahead. Why? Because it doesn’t want to.

BTW, all our problems can be solved using Keynesian ‘New Deal’ economics. (The left/right economic spectrum is defined as: 100% left is full government control over the economy; 100% right is no government involvement in the economy; in the center is the Keynesian mixed-market system; social democracy is left-leaning Keynesian; neoliberal is right-of-center to right-wing Friedmanian neoclassical [New Keynesian and New Classical economic schools respectively].)
For instance, the West could easily transform to a full green-energy economy within 30 years by gradually subsidizing green energy with progressive taxation to make it cheaper than dirty energy and by investing in green infrastructure to create jobs and GDP growth. Or in other words, by doing the very same kind of things we did during the post-war era (1945-1980) except with a green emphasis.
As the Western economy is being reflated, globalization inversion can be used to enforce rising living standards and global environmental regulations in undeveloped countries with ‘fair trade’ social and green tariffs.
All these ideas are in the air. The movement to end the disastrous Friedmanian neoliberal era is building. It’s the same kind of movement that swept FDR to power in the 1930s. Only this time it will be much more powerful because the world’s population is connected across the social media. It’s time to smash the establishment levy with our votes and let the prosperity and human development flood out.

Yes, why listen to Cassandra’s warnings? Troy was impregnable, and the gods were on the side of the King… Well, “God bless America…” and what could go wrong now?

That is certainly an optimistic solution to our problems.
The people who structure our society, unfortunately, are not proponents of the New Deal, or any system really, that caters to the needs of the people. The system itself sorts and selects candidates that support the status quo.

Agreed. Those with little exposure to the problems of society have no motivation to change said society, especially when it benefits them.

The very first thing I thought was, “well, global warming debunks this video very well.” Global warming affects the power elite too, and they aren’t doing shit about it.

There could be a second effect going on, that is that the power elite are insulated, to a certain extent, from the effects of global warming.
When things go actually to poo on a grander scale, when money and affluence are no longer factors, then they might sit up and take notice.
