Speaking of articles, your post reminded me of an article about why there are so many female voices used in digital assistance (robots, cell phones, GPS) like Siri.
http://mic.com/articles/126326/why-siri-cortana-and-so-many-robot-voices-are-female
“Deborah Tannen, a professor of linguistics at Georgetown and an expert on gendered communication, told Mic female voices may invoke memories of our mothers.
“You expect your mother to wait on you and do everything for you. Your father: You better tiptoe around him, he might be busy, he might not do it right, you shouldn’t bother him,” she said. “In a way, I see it as related to the secretary phenomenon.
This secretary phenomenon is reflected in female robot voices. The voices mentioned above play very specific roles: helpful and competent assistants, like a chirpy secretary employed by a futuristic Don Draper.
“There’s kind of a history of feeling women are there to serve you,” Tannen said. “It’s OK to impose on a woman [who’s like] a secretary. It’s OK to interrupt her. It’s OK to have her serve you,” she said, explaining the mindset.
But when it comes to other contexts, like the voices of authoritative information tellers and guides, male speakers are often used.”

ah. yes. This is exactly what is expected of all women — but most especially of women who are Indigenous, working-class, immigrants, drug addicted, impoverished — the women who reside in that marginal space of the inner city — the women who keep the “human services” industry alive and thriving. Really, the only humans served in this industry are those who are already paid to be there — the advocates, the ‘outreach workers’ the so-called ‘support’ workers — and most especially those who manage these workers, who are the ED’s of these ‘services’. They (we — I was once employed in this industry) are paid to reinforce the behaviour Russ described, and to manage the resentment and insist upon the gratitude. ugh. It’s time for a revolution, it really is. But how? How shall we see each other and link arms and storm the walls?
I don’t know yet. Only that we must.
