Science fiction is one of those genres that can inspire genuine hope for the future. Gene Roddenberry’s idea was well ahead of its time, let’s hope we can live up to some of the ideals he put forward as to how 23rd century life would be like.
Also, I had no idea about the significance of the surname Sulu – what a great symbolic name. :)

Sedate Me
People today are awash in 500 channels and hyper-individualized media. They also think that everybody in the 60’s was a free-wheeling hippie. They have NO idea how subversive Star Trek was for TV back then!
The crew alone was light years ahead of its time. A black woman, a (gay) Asian, a Russian who wasn’t a mortal enemy. Shit, they even had TWO Canadians with free health care!
Yeah, the interracial kiss (forced against their will by an alien) was huge. But there were several issues discussed in code that were essentially forbidden on TV drama; the Cold War, the foolishness of war, women as equal crew members. These were all potential 3rd rails.
Sadly, today’s Star Trek is really just a way to line JJ Abrahms pocket and cross promote Super-Squishies and whatever the fuck else.
