Indeed.
Student centered learning -teaching critical thinking- is harder that it looks. There are many factors that go into making a classroom (community of learners) work: Dispute management, grooming and feeding, respect, time management, curricular planing, etc.

Yes, I well know. Being unable to break into regular teaching work here, I was contracted to fire up an adult ed program when all the automotive jobs headed south. When it came time for accreditation of my program, that’s when my supervisor approached having a stroke for me not ‘following’ adult ed guidelines (as if passing entry requirements for colleges and universities were somehow against the rules). The accreditation team thought so highly of my class – and the 85 students who thrived under it – that a video was made of what a modern adult ed class should like.
But wait, there’s more…
My supervisor got a plaque on her wall, the Board received funding to make it a full time position in a time of staff reductions, and that ruled me out from teaching it. They went through five other regular teachers in the next semester and the program was closed at the end of it for a lack of students. Dontcha just love working under union rules?
