I’m so embarrassed to be an American. It was all I could do to get through that video. I’ve been doing research on an upcoming post and this morning I came across this article. I had already seen the latest Gallop polls released this month. Americans are dumb and getting dumber, no thanks to the fucking fundamentalists who’ve become filthy rich. They are using those funds to change our laws — devaluing education and especially science.

Way to go American government. Continue to give these idiots tax exempt status, essentially rewarding them for spreading illiteracy like a plague.

I would argue that getting rich is just one aspect of the fundy game plan. Ignorant people are easier to manipulate and control, thus being able to herd folk in the ‘correct’ direction in society is a valuable asset.

Indeed, and if those from Europe or even Canada think their immune, they better think again. From the European Evangelical Alliance (EEA):
“Vision 2020 is the product of EEA’s reflection on religious liberty trends over 19 years, learning from our members, partners and political experiences. It has an ambitious goal – to pave the way for far greater Gospel impact in Europe by 2020 – because we have changed attitudes towards religious freedom, and because we have renewed Evangelical confidence in the Gospel and in our ability to share it, no matter what happens. Europe’s Evangelicals will be effective Good News People.”

From the Christian Science Monitor, there’s an article titled: “US evangelicals aim to influence European law”
From The American Perspective — “Flush with cash and ancient hatreds, American evangelicals are incubating a Christian right in secular Europe.”
“And as evangelical Christianity and other conservative religious movements gain force in Europe, the American right is finding more allies on the Continent. Cumulatively, their victories may be changing the global climate on some of the biggest social issues of our time. “We have a conservative period now in history — a substantial movement to the right around the world,” says James Paul, executive director of the Global Policy Forum in New York and a prominent thinker on the globalization of the Christian right.”

One can point in Canada to the PM’s recent announcement that we are funding aid for women and their care, but not abortion as it is to divisive an issue.
Since when, in Canada, is the reproductive rights of women even an issue?
Since the resurgence of religious stupidity as you’ve said in the US is the answer. The tide of fundamentalist brain-washing has been metastasizing Northward at an alarming rate.
The infiltration of toxic religious poppycock is high on my list of things that make me unhappy, let me assure you. :/

I certainly don’t blame you for feeling that way. I just happen to live in the cesspool of this madness. Humans are pretty damn dumb. Why? Because they fail to learn from the past.

Agreed.
But there is more to it, the historical (political, economic, et cetera , insert adjective here) ignorance is purposefully cultivated in our society. It serves the needs of those who move in circles of power and influence.
If people genuinely connected with the past they would see, or at least be exposed to very same mistakes we are making, *again*, and might do something about it.
19th Century robber-baron capitalism sucked – yet despite the mass social movements that forced society away from the worst of the greed and exploitation we are merrily going down that road yet again.
I can’t describe how many shades of awesome that will be. *sigh*

Exactly. History shows us that when around half the population becomes educated they will revolt against corrupt power.

One of the jewels of cynicism I need to stop polishing is this:
Once things get bad enough, people then will see who is oppressing them, then we will have the mass movement necessary to change things for the better.
Taking off the morose coloured glasses what will actually happen is that, yet another, scapegoat will be found, popular discontent will be misdirected and the system will remain intact.
Only when the breakdown is truly catastrophic; we’re talking cutting down the last tree on Easter Island catastrophic; will people get it.
And by then the ecological, social, and economic damage the elites have wrought will be irreparable, and since we have no more undiscovered countries to move to and exploit, we will then be well and truly fucked.
I hope to be dead before that happens.
On a less dark note, this doesn’t discourage me from doing what I can to make my little corner of the world a better place, but I have few illusions left as to the endgame situation.

“On a less dark note, this doesn’t discourage me from doing what I can to make my little corner of the world a better place,”
I’m right there with you. Religion and god belief, in and of itself, is not the problem — but it is used to dupe the masses. Believe that the day of judgement is at hand (approximately 60% of Americans) and they will say “why bother getting an education”. “Why bother planning for the future”. “Jesus is coming back soon”. They are told to be in the world, but not of it. “Why bother with climate change, Jesus is coming back soon.”
Before his death, Christopher Hitchens was interviewed about women’s human rights and how they’d been undermine throughout recorded history. He stated that one of the main reasons male dominant religions took hold was because they could own women. If men wanted to rule over women and own them like property, simply because they wanted to, then women would most likely tell them to take a hike. But, if women thought that “God” wanted them to, they might be more incline to submit.
This is the same methodology that the evangelicals are using to become powerful, globally. It worked for Hitler, too. It’s how he managed to turn a Christian country against the Jews, because he convinced them that the Jews killed Jesus. This is why I work tirelessly to bring awareness about the power of religious indoctrination on the brain, how easy it is for humans to be programed, and the cunning methods they use to do it.
I appreciate all you do, as well.
