Dear Religious people,
Have you thanked your local atheist today? If not, you should because atheism and by extension secular society, is saving you from the immoral loopy shit your bronze age beliefs demand. The latest demonstration of how immoral and barbaric religion is comes to us from the Sudan. (read more about Mariam at Al Jazeera)
“Mariam Yehya Ibrahim, a Sudanese mother, doctor and Christian, has been sentenced to flogging and death unless she recants her Christian faith. She is 8 months pregnant and has a two-year-old son. Please, join the international community in asking Sudan not to execute her for being a Christian.”
Wow.
You “go hard” there Islam – the religion of peace and friend to women across the globe.
“Ibrahim is charged with adultery on the grounds that her marriage to a Christian man from South Sudan is considered void under Shari’a law, for which the penalty is flogging. She’s also charged with apostasy, or abandonment of religion, for which the penalty is death.”
Well you can see the problem here, obviously, that if you decide to change from one fatuous belief system to another, the penalty is death. Funny we don’t hear about these sorts of things in North America. You can thank god that the United States wasn’t founded as christian nation – if it was, this sort of egregious crime against humanity would be common place in the lower 48 all the time.
You know why it isn’t? (hint: rhymes with ‘Fecularism’)
The very secular foundations of society that the christian right is chipping away at are the very same foundations that are preserving the “not-allowing-stupid-religious-shit-to-go-down” haven that Americans inhabit.
Witness the fucking evilly deranged face of theocratic rule and tell me that this is what you want for your society? Getting a little closer to god gets you a little closer to barbarity. How depraved must one be, in the pursuit of a religious based society, to somehow think that theocratic rule is good?
“Mariam is the daughter of a Christian woman and Muslim man. She was raised Christian after her father left. However, Sudanese law mandates that children born to Muslim fathers are considered Muslim.
The fact that a woman could be sentenced to death for her religious choice, and to flogging for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion is abhorrent.”
This does NOT happen in modern secular society.
Your pious objections to secularism are noted; you can now sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up and think about the good that secularism has done for you and your freedom to believe in vacuous mythology of your choice. Maybe, just maybe, instead of campaigning for and electing people with ‘good christian values’ you could decide to support someone that is defending your very (comfortable) way of life, here in reality, where it matters.
Continue to erode the secular aegis at your own peril.
Lastly, get off your damn knees, stop praying, and go do something useful for once – sign the petition to save Mariam’s life.

It is just so maddening. We have the results of what religion+power does happening right before us, and yet, the merry lemmings march onward.
This is a very human tragedy unfolding right now – so much pain and suffering for Meriam Yehya Ibrahim and her family for what? Religious bullshite that has no place in the 21st century. :/

I did a story just this week for the NYT’s about a 26 year old Indonesian who was jailed for 19 months for simply coming out as an atheist. How perverted is that?

I’ve been watching this with dismay; and it is a sign of the sheer politicization of Islam, once this woman would not be so harshly punished since as a product of a mixed (how did THAT happen) parentage, she might be left a choice. After all, Christians AND Jews are termed “people of the Book” and it is considered the SAME God. Also, I hate how that petition is worded…tho’ I signed it; they wouldn’t be executing her till the baby was born in any case. So, the response to that petition is likely to be a “Fuck you, we are NOT killing a pregnant woman.” They wait till the baby is born and then kill the offending woman.

Moderate Muslims will claim their religion is not like this fundamentalist version yet at the bottom of both steaming heaps of shit-religion is the Koran. As long as it can be interpreted in the way that would murder this woman it remains a vile and dangerous book. This is but one of thousands of reasons to desire the religions of Abraham to be wiped from the face of this planet.
It is a shame that enlightened thinking and intellect cannot be dropped from planes in teh chemtrails.

Well, there is one thing that could have been done to comply with the laws of the land and protect her life — her husband could have converted to Islam. Certainly the entire religious aspect is simply ridiculous, but he refused to convert, she did, and now she’s sentenced to death. What’s more important, your wife or your religion?

I’m not particularly fond of the petition either, but it is whats out there at the moment. I’d double-extra sign the petition against religious patriarchal misogynistic bullycookery that kills women, but I suspect that most are not willing to get behind truth of that calibre.

Sadly, you are likely right. After all control of women through religion is as popular as ever, and patriarchy keeps the men on top where they want to be.

The story from Sudan is a blot on our collective psyche. How do you justify such an insane punishment. Who is offended? Who has complained? Did Mo complain or Allah or some other phantom?

Over at violet wisps blog, an ‘educated reconverted christian’ is busily explaining to me and other women how patriarchy is myth and is certainly not a patriarchal feature of society.
Educated chew-toys are the best.

:::growls::: You know, nothing makes me love violent mythology and wish I knew where to sign up to be a vampire than a throat begging to be ripped silent while mouthing stupidities.
I’ve never been a video gamer — but at times, I think I could get into a heavily mythologized “Sims” and see if I couldn’t improve the general genetic strain of humanity by taking out the willfully moronic.

If you ever have time, I would highly recommend any of Sid Myers Civilization games. They are turn based (no twich reflexes required) build your own nation games. :)
I roleplay a baby-dragon in a pencil and paper roleplaying game on the weekends. It is…very cathartic, to say the least. :)

Yet the religious well gloss this over and continue on with the notion that God is good and to believe is holy…
Which is worse the people doing this horrendous shite, or the people, through belief that enable it?

@SM, any religion that makes you choose between religion and wife/spouse is as good a definition as you will get for the definition of tyranny.
